Burn Permits & Burn Bans

Know the rules before you burn. Regulations protect your neighbors, your property, and our community.

BURN BAN ACTIVE

Due to extremely dry conditions and elevated fire danger, the Townsville Burn Ban is in effect countywide. All outdoor burning is prohibited until conditions improve and the ban is officially lifted.

When Burning IS Permitted

  • A valid burn permit must be obtained before any outdoor burning.
  • Permits are valid for one burn, on the date specified.
  • Burning is only permitted between 8 AM and one hour before sunset.
  • Burn piles must be no larger than 4 feet in diameter.
  • Always have water and a shovel immediately available.
  • Never leave a burn pile unattended at any time.
  • Fully extinguish the fire before leaving the area.
  • Prohibited materials: household trash, treated lumber, plastics, tires, or chemically treated materials.
  • Burning is prohibited on Red Flag Warning days regardless of permit status.

Burn Ban Violation Penalties

Violations can result in fines up to $500 per incident and liability for firefighting costs. If a fire escapes due to an unpermitted burn, you may be held responsible for all suppression expenses.

Request a Burn Permit

⚠️ Permit requests are suspended during the active burn ban.
